A great portrait doesn't always come easily. Portraits aren't just about looking nice or even the photographer's camera skills, there is a psychology behind getting that perfect shot.
The best photographers don't just take pictures. Great photographers are able to read you, and with this they can adjust lighting, camera angles, and timing to get a beautiful portrait, but most importantly a great photographer makes you feel comfortable and confident.
Over my past 13 years of being a headshot photographer, the thing I've heard the most is "I hate getting my picture taken, my pictures never turn out the way I want them to." I make it my mission to have all my clients walking out of my studio with pictures they are proud to show off.
To get the perfect portrait there are a number of things that a professional photographer needs to bring to the table. Of course, there is the obvious check list of items that photographers go through to ensure that their shot looks good like adjusting lighting, angles, lenses, and client positioning. That checklist of items only scratches the surface of what makes a great portrait.
Every individual aspect of what goes into creating a beautiful portrait has psychology working behind it. Take lighting for example, soft lighting makes us feel warm and friendly, creating pictures with genuine smiles and laughter. Dramatic lighting causes us to feel bold and powerful, creating pictures that exude confidence.
Backgrounds can also change the way someone is portrayed in their pictures. With clean simple backgrounds people may pose differently than they would with a bold sharp background. Even the timing of when photographers decide to take their pictures can change the way a photo turns out. If a photographer uses all of these aspects to their advantage, they can create a portrait that their clients will love for a lifetime.
The most important way photographers break down their clients' walls and make them feel comfortable in front of the camera is by creating a connection with them. Small things like walking your client through the steps you're taking to get them their perfect shot so they know what's going on, talking them through poses so they feel confident in what they're doing, and playing their favorite playlist can take their photo from good to great!
Creating an inviting atmosphere where my clients feel confident and more importantly comfortable is my number one priority. By making my clients feel comfortable and establishing trust with them their portrait can go from stiff and awkward to bold and confident. A good photographer knows how to talk to you, distract you, and create a space where you feel safe to show off your authenticity and true personality rather than using your typical "photo faces".
